The setting is St. Louis, the opening days of the 1904 World's Fair. A well-to-do family find out the father is being transfered to New York just as the family girls are falling in love and looking forward to the fair.

Jerry Mulligan is an ex-G.I. and a struggling American painter in Paris. He is 'discovered' by an influential heiress with an interest in more than Jerry's art.
